Essential Question
Why do students need to write and speak in complete sentences?
Summary:
Students will know how to write in complete sentences and paragraphs based off of a topic and use this technique in the real world.
Objectives

  • 70% of students will know how to write in complete sentence using capitalization, handwriting, punctuation, oral reading and spacing (CHOPS). Write a complete paragraphs based on a topic using CHOPS, transition words emphasizing beginning(opening sentence) middle, end (closing sentence) With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing(using keyboarding skills)as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

Tasks
1) Day One- Students will start off by writing a 5-8 sentence paragraph.
This Pre-Test will let me know where students are with their writing skills. The topic will be "my favorite food". Most student complain about the school lunch. Students will have the opportunity to talk about some of the food items that they would like to be served at school. Students will review writing in complete sentences by writing a response to a question given "What is you favorite food" on the SMART Board. The students and I will begin to write in complete sentences using "Padlet" a fun interactive website.

2) Day Two- Students will be introduced to writing in complete paragraphs. I will present what opening, middle and closing sentence of using examples of food that I would like to see on the lunch menu. Also students will be introduced to common transitions words using pictures to show example using the app "Google Slides".
Students will be able to write a paragraph about what food they would like to have for lunch and why. Students will be told that if they write a convincing paragraph, the paragraph will be shared with the lunch staff. Students will then switch papers with a classmate for peer review.

3) Day Three- . Students will complete this activity using "Google Docs". By this time students should be about to write in complete sentences using capitalization, handwriting, punctuation, oral reading and spacing and transition words. At the end of the lesson one students will have an opportunity to write to the lunch staff letting them know some of the items that they would like on the menu. Most of the students enjoy pizza. They wish that they could have pizza twice a week but the budget can only pay for pizza once a week. Students will have the opportunity to write a letter to the pizza company that provides our school with lunch. For homework students will get into groups and come up with a essay explaining their summer plans.
Personalization/Differentiation
Students are able to come up with their own personal topics. Students who are grasping the concepts of writing in complete sentences and paragraphs will have to opportunity to complete a 5 paragraph essay and post to "Wikispaces". Struggling students will have to option to have their work modified by writing fewer sentences for the paragraph activity. Struggling students will also have the support from me while the class is working independently.
Real-World Connection
Students will be able to voice their concerns through writing letters. Students need to know that they have a voice and if they are facing an issue, they should be able to voice their concerns. Adults will be connected when the students write the letter to the lunch aides. The outside world will be connected through students writing to the pizza company.
Assessment:
At the end of the assignment, students will write me a complete paragraph choosing their own topic. students should use CHOPS, transition words. I will asses students by the final writing piece. By the end of the assignments, students will be able to voice their concerns through writing. There maybe a situation where the students voice need to be heard. Students will be able to create a complete paragraph getting their point across.
